—“ye, that have loved me!—ye, that have deemed me holy!—behold me here, the one sinner of the world! At last!—at last!—I stand upon the spot where, seven years since, I should have stood; here, with this woman, whose arm, more than the little strength wherewith I have crept hitherward, sustains me, at this dreadful moment, from grovelling down upon my face! Lo, the scarlet letter which Hester wears! Ye have all shuddered at it! Wherever her walk hath been,—wherever, so miserably burdened, she may have hoped to find repose,—it hath cast a lurid gleam of awe and horrible repugnance round about her. But there stood one in the midst of you, at whose brand of sin and infamy ye have not shuddered!”
At that moment Chillingworth moves forward telling him save himself and cast away the woman and child, but he extends his hand to Hester. He speaks earnestly saying that this should have been done seven years ago. The minister stands upright without Hester's support and tells the crowd that he, like Hester, has a red stigma, he collapsed on the stage tearing away his ministerial garments reveals what looks to be some sort of mark, the crowd is in shock. They watch as Hester with her arms around the minister and Pearl's hand in his. Pearl gave him a kiss and he admitted his sin before dyeing his last words before his death, with tremulous solemnity telling Hester the sin that they have broken and forgetting their God.
A year following Dimmesdale's death is the death of Roger Chillingworth, leaving a great deal of property to little Pearl. Pearl is known as the elf child to some people went on and lived her life and is one of the richest heiress in the new world. shortly after Chillingworth's death Pearl and Hester disappear with no news to anyone. The story of what happened on the scaffold and the woman with the scarlet letter becomes a legend
